Abstract

The increasing digitization of higher education has underscored the importance of Management Information Systems (MIS) as essential tools for enhancing administrative efficiency, academic management, and institutional decision-making. Despite substantial investments in information and communication technologies across Nigerian universities, concerns persist regarding the effectiveness and sustainability of MIS in achieving institutional goals. Anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which explains technology adoption in terms of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, this study examined the effectiveness of Management Information Systems in federal universities in Imo State, Nigeria, between 2015- 2026. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised academic and non-academic staff of the selected federal universities, from which a representative sample was drawn using a multistage sampling technique. Data were analyzed using mean statistics. The findings revealed that MIS significantly improved administrative efficiency, records management, communication processes, student information management, academic planning, and institutional decision-making. However, inadequate funding, poor ICT infrastructure, unstable power supply, cyber-security concerns, and inadequate staff training constrained effective utilization. The study concluded that effective MIS deployment is critical to efficient university governance and recommended the mandatory integration of interoperable MIS platforms across all university departments, combined with continuous professional development programs for administrative and technical personnel, to ensure effective use, reduce operational inefficiencies, and promote data-driven governance, as well as increased investment in ICT infrastructure, staff capacity development, and strengthened digital governance policies.
