Abstract

This paper examined the political education and the development of national consciousness in Nigeria, focusing on secondary school students. Specifically, the paper conceptualized political education, development and national consciousness while exploring their interplay in fostering informed, patriotic, and engaged citizens. The paper argued that political education enhances critical thinking, instills national values, promotes social cohesion and cultivates a sense of national pride and responsibility among secondary school students. The paper further posited that effective political education can increase awareness of national issues, promote national unity, and encourage active citizenship. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, inconsistent curriculum implementation and insufficient teacher training hinder its impact. The paper concluded that fostering national identity and civic responsibility is crucial for the unity and democratic growth of Nigeria. The paper therefore recommended that policy interventions and curriculum reforms should be targeted to strengthen political education as a tool for national consciousness and development.
